Computer plans a special issue in May 2017 on learning technologies.
To identify best practices and streamline pathways to success, mainstream educators, curriculum developers, and learning technology specialists who are concerned with the 21st century’s most forward-looking and effective educational and learning technologies and related social networking trends can submit articles addressing, for example, matters related to openness, online or hybrid, blended individualized and group instruction, collaborative methodologies, adaptive learning (using open and big data and/or cloud computing), deep learning, mobile learning, semantic computing methodologies, educational technology standards, social issues, and so on.
This special issue will also include selected contributions from both the IEEE Symposium on Computer Education and Learning Technologies (CELT), which is affiliated with the IEEE Computer Society’s Conference on Computers, Software and Applications (COMPSAC), and the Computer Society–sponsored track on Computing Education Challenges at the IEEE Education Society’s Conference on Technology, Assessment, and Learning for Engineering (TALE). Papers to be invited to this special issue based on review results and selection of the program committees from CELT and TALE will be published in Computer only. However, an abstract of such papers will be included in the respective conference proceedings of CELT and TALE.
In addition to CELT and TALE articles, through this open call we seek submissions describing previously unpublished, original, state-of-the-art research or state-of-the-practice in learning technologies that are not currently under review by a conference or journal. Updates to ongoing research efforts are welcome, as long as the completely rewritten content is at least 50 percent different from published manuscripts, the new document cites the authors’ previous work, and the authors provide the editors with a description of how the new document differs.

- K–12 initiatives and partnerships;
- laboratory experiences (on-campus and remote);
- learning analytics;
- learning management systems;
- marketing and outreach for engineering programs;

- open educational resources;
- research training (undergraduate and graduate);
- service learning;
- social networking trends, tools, and technologies related to teaching and learning
- work-based and work-integrated education; and
- learning technologies for developing countries.
Articles should be understandable to a broad audience of computer science and engineering professionals, avoiding a focus on theory, mathematics, jargon, and abstract concepts.
There is a hard 6,000-word limit (figures and tables are equivalent to 300 words each) for final manuscripts. Authors should be aware that Computer cannot accept or process papers over the word limit.
All manuscripts are subject to peer review on both technical merit and relevance to Computer's readership. Accepted papers will be professionally edited for content and style.
Authors of accepted papers are encouraged to submit multimedia, such as a 2- to 4-minute podcast, a video, or an audio or audio/video interview of the authors by an expert in the field, which the Computer staff can help facilitate, record, and edit.
