In January 2001, Larry Sanger and Jimmy Wales began work on a radical new idea: an encyclopedia created entirely by volunteers and made freely available over the Internet. Many people who heard about the project predicted it would fail, but Wikipedia caught on rapidly. By April the English-language edition had 1,000 articles; by October, 10,000; and within two years, 100,000. In early 2011, as Wikipedia celebrates its 10-year anniversary, the site boasts 17 million articles in 279 languages — 3.5 million in English — and attracts 78 million viewers monthly. Read More »
