
LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 24 July 2026 – The IEEE Computer Society (CS), the world's preeminent computer science and engineering member organization, today announced that its journals continue to rank among the most cited and influential in the industry, based on the 2026 Journal Impact Factor™ (JIF™) rankings and 2026 Eigenfactor® Scores. Numerous IEEE CS publications earned top honors across both measures, reflecting the quality, rigor, and enduring impact of the research the Society publishes.

The newly released 2026 JIF rankings showcase the strength and sustained impact of IEEE CS’ journals. Seventeen publications earned an Impact Factor of 3.0 or higher, a widely accepted indicator of a leading computer science/engineering publication, representing 66.7% of the Society's journals. Among them, the following 10 journals achieved the highest Impact Factor scores:
Additionally, almost 61% of IEEE CS journals grew their Impact Factor score year over year, with the top three journals experiencing gains of 50% or more. The top five publications with year-over-year gains are as follows:
Not only are IEEE CS publications leading the research community in citations and influence, but these publications are standing the test of time. Based on the 2026 JIF rankings, almost 60% of IEEE CS journals (58.3%) showed stronger citation impact over a five-year period compared to their annual metrics. And on average, IEEE journals showed an 11.9% increase in their five-year impact compared to their annual impact factor. Even some of IEEE's longest-standing journals are experiencing explosive growth. For instance, the IEEE Transactions on Haptics, an 18-year-old publication, grew its citation impact over five years (+29%), and the IEEE Intelligent Systems, a 40-year-old publication, grew by 26.7%, underscoring the enduring influence of the research it publishes.

Even when looking beyond the IEEE CS portfolio to all journals evaluated in the 2026 JIF rankings, IEEE CS publications continued to distinguish themselves in both emerging and established disciplines. In artificial intelligence (AI), IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence ranked first in Eigenfactor, second in total citations, and fourth in Impact Factor. The journal also demonstrated exceptional performance in the broader field of electrical engineering, placing fourth in both Eigenfactor and Impact Factor rankings and fifth in total citations.

Annually, Clarivate releases its Journal Citation Reports™ (JCR™), which deliver JIF rankings. The 2026 report evaluated 22,643 high-quality academic journals from 113 countries spanning 254 scientific and research disciplines. The JIF measures the frequency with which the average article in a publication has been cited in a particular year. The calculation is based on a two-year period and involves dividing the number of times articles were cited by the number of articles that are citable. It offers a key metric to assess the overall strength and industry influence of a particular publication.
The Eigenfactor® Score is calculated by the Eigenfactor Project at the Bergstrom Lab at the University of Washington and published by Clarivate. The scores are based on the number of times articles from the journal published in the past five years have been cited in the JCR year, but it also considers which journals have contributed these citations so that highly cited journals will influence the network more than lesser cited journals. It provides a key measure of a journal’s total influence within the scholarly community.
