LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 9 September 2019—Jeffrey Voas was appointed editor in chief of Computer magazine, the flagship magazine of the IEEE Computer Society and a leading publication in the computing industry, for the 2020–2022 term.

Voas is currently a computer scientist at the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Before joining NIST in 2009, he was an entrepreneur and co-founded Cigital, which is now a part of Synopsys. Voas wrote his first article for Computer in 1998 (“The Challenges of Using COTS Software in Component-Based Development”) and joined the editorial board of Computer when he started writing a column called Cybertrust in 2011, which still runs today.

He also served as associate editor in chief for two other IEEE Computer Society titles: IT Professional (1999–2013) and IEEE Software (1999–2003). Voas was an advisory board member for IEEE Software from 2005–2007 and rejoined the editorial board of IT Professional in 2018. In addition, he has served as the IEEE Reliability Society President (2003–2005, 2009–2010, and 2017–2018), a member of the IEEE Computer Society Board of Governors (2007–2009), and IEEE Division VI Director (2011–2012).

Voas co-authored two John Wiley books (Software Assessment: Reliability, Safety, and Testability [1995] and Software Fault Injection: Inoculating Software Against Errors [1998]). He received his undergraduate degree in computer engineering from Tulane University (1985) and his MS and PhD in computer science from the College of William and Mary (1986 and 1990, respectively). He is a Fellow of the IEEE, a member of IEEE Eta-Kappa Nu (IEEE Honor Society), a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and a life member of the Washington Academy of Sciences. His current research interests include the Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, verified time, and timestamping using atomic clocks. Voas received the IEEE Computer Society Meritorious Service Award in 2000, a Gold Medal from the US Department of Commerce in 2014, and the IEEE Leadership Service Award in 2019 for his work with the IEEE Reliability Society.

“Over many decades, Jeff Voas has been a committed volunteer for both IEEE and the Computer Society,” said IEEE Computer Society Vice President of Publications Fabrizio Lombardi. “His activities have spanned multiple IEEE societies and he has consistently shown high dedication and competence in matters related to technical leadership. Through his distinguished career at NIST, he has contributed to significant technical advances in software reliability and testing/verification; he has been elevated to IEEE Fellow for these contributions. Jeff is a leader who inspires his colleagues and peers. In his new position as editor in chief of the flagship magazine of the Computer Society, I am confident that he will lead Computer to new heights, foster innovative technical coverage, and be responsive to the needs of Computer Society members on a global basis while promoting the publication’s excellence. I am thrilled that Jeff is taking this new volunteer position and am confident that he will yet again will be an asset to the Computer Society and the entire computing community.”

Cecilia Metra, 2019 president of the IEEE Computer Society, added: “I am sure Dr. Voas will significantly contribute to further enhance the success of Computer, and I am looking forward to collaborating with him for the benefit of all our Computer Society members worldwide.”
