LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 9 September 2019—Jeffrey Voas was appointed editor in chief of Computer magazine, the flagship magazine of the IEEE Computer Society and a leading publication in the computing industry, for the 2020–2022 term.
Voas is currently a computer scientist at the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Before joining NIST in 2009, he was an entrepreneur and co-founded Cigital, which is now a part of Synopsys. Voas wrote his first article for Computer in 1998 (“The Challenges of Using COTS Software in Component-Based Development”) and joined the editorial board of Computer when he started writing a column called Cybertrust in 2011, which still runs today.
He also served as associate editor in chief for two other IEEE Computer Society titles: IT Professional (1999–2013) and IEEE Software (1999–2003). Voas was an advisory board member for IEEE Software from 2005–2007 and rejoined the editorial board of IT Professional in 2018. In addition, he has served as the IEEE Reliability Society President (2003–2005, 2009–2010, and 2017–2018), a member of the IEEE Computer Society Board of Governors (2007–2009), and IEEE Division VI Director (2011–2012).
Voas co-authored two John Wiley books (Software Assessment: Reliability, Safety, and Testability [1995] and Software Fault Injection: Inoculating Software Against Errors [1998]). He received his undergraduate degree in computer engineering from Tulane University (1985) and his MS and PhD in computer science from the College of William and Mary (1986 and 1990, respectively). He is a Fellow of the IEEE, a member of IEEE Eta-Kappa Nu (IEEE Honor Society), a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and a life member of the Washington Academy of Sciences. His current research interests include the Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, verified time, and timestamping using atomic clocks. Voas received the IEEE Computer Society Meritorious Service Award in 2000, a Gold Medal from the US Department of Commerce in 2014, and the IEEE Leadership Service Award in 2019 for his work with the IEEE Reliability Society.
