USC’s C.-C. Jay Kuo Named to Receive IEEE Computer Society 2019 Edward J. McCluskey Technical Achievement Award

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 11 March 2019 – C.-C. Jay Kuo, distinguished professor of electrical engineering and computer science, and the director of the Multimedia Communications Laboratory at USC, has been selected to receive the IEEE Computer Society 2019 Edward J. McCluskey Technical Achievement Award, for “outstanding contributions to multimedia computing technologies and their applications.”C C Jay KouC C Jay Kou

Kuo is a world-renowned technical leader in multimedia computing technologies, systems and applications with an enduring impact on both academic and industry realms in the last three decades. He has made seminal contributions to video coding technologies in three areas: fast motion search, H.264 rate control, and perceptual coding. Kuo’s deblocking filter and rate control technologies are widely used in video capturing devices such as smart phone cameras. Furthermore, he conducted extensive work in applying wavelets to image processing such as texture analysis, curve representation, fractal analysis, watermarking and data hiding. Recently, he has focused on machine learning, artificial intelligence, and computer vision and has developed a mathematical model that shed light on the mysterious behavior of deep learning networks.

Kuo has co-authored 280 journal papers, 920 conference papers, 39 patents, and 14 books. He delivered 40 keynote speeches and 700 invited lectures at conferences, research institutes, universities and companies. He has guided 147 students to their Ph.D. degrees and supervised 30 postdoctoral fellows. He is listed as the top advisor in the Mathematics Genealogy Project in the number of supervised Ph.D. students. Kuo received the 2016 IEEE Computer Society Taylor L. Booth Education Award and the 2017 IEEE Leon K. Kirchmayer Graduate Teaching Award. He is a Fellow of IEEE, AAAS and SPIE.

The IEEE Computer Society Edward J. McCluskey Technical Achievement Award is given for outstanding and innovative contributions to the fields of computer and information science and engineering or computer technology, usually within the past 10 to 15 years. Contributions must have significantly promoted technical progress in the field.

The award consists of a certificate and a $2,000 honorarium, and will be awarded to Kuo at the IEEE Computer Society COMPSAC conference dinner. COMPSAC will be held on Wednesday, 17 July 2019, at the Harley Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
