IEEE Local Computer Networks (LCN) Conference Celebrates 40th Anniversary

IEEE's venerable Local Computer Networking conference, one of the longest continually running networking conferences, is reaching a major milestone.

Los Alamitos, Calif., June 09, 2015 — The Organizing Committee and Steering Committee of the IEEE LCN conference announce LCN's 40th anniversary. The 40th running of LCN will occur during the week of 25 October 2015 at the Sheraton Sand Key Resort, Clearwater Beach, Florida, USA. In addition to high quality workshops and paper sessions, LCN-40 will include historic displays and mini-sessions outlining the many contributions LCN and its attendees have made to the networking discipline since LCN's inception in 1976.

The IEEE LCN conference has grown to be one of the premier conferences on the leading edge of theoretical and practical aspects of computer networking. LCN is the flagship conference of the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Computer Communications TCCC, and a highly interactive conference that enables an effective interchange of results and ideas among researchers, users, and product developers.

The first LCN conference was held on 16–17 September 1976 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, sponsored by the University of Minnesota (UMN), University Computer Center with the cooperation of Network Systems, Inc. The two primary organizing committee members included Dr. Peter C. Patton and Dr. Abe Franck, UMN Computer Center.

At this first running the conference was entitled the "Conference on Experiments in New Approaches to Local Computer Networking.” The second running was 13–14 October 1977 when the name changed to the "Conference on 'A Second Look at Local Computer Networking.'" The third running was 23–24 October 1978 when the conference name changed again to the "Third Conference on Local Computer Networks." Since then the conference was simply called LCN. From the fourth LCN (1979) on, the conference was sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Computer Communications.

For the past 40 years, major developments have been reported and discussed at the LCN conference: from the local area networks area, especially CSMA and the Ethernet technology, optical networks, high-speed networks, such as FDDI, DQDB, and ATM, to the global Internet, with routing, performance, congestion control, reliability and network management aspects and its related protocols, including more specialized aspects such as security, peer-to-peer, QoS, wireless ad-hoc networks, and sensor networks. These technologies were reported and discussed in conference papers, tutorials, panel sessions, keynote addresses, and workshops.

It is the sincere wish of the Organizing Committee and Steering Committee that you will join LCN in October at the Sheraton Sand Key Resort, Clearwater Beach, Florida, USA to help celebrate the 40th running of LCN. (See www.ieeelcn.org for details). Please don’t miss the opportunity to be part of the 40th anniversary!
