Visions for a more sustainable future for humanity are critical for dealing with the ongoing climate crisis. With the advent of new production methods, smarter energy grids, and efficient vehicles there is reason for renewed excitement around the rapid deployment of these and similar technologies and a need to also consider the potential impacts such technologies will have on our daily lives as well as the future of computing. Not only should we consider how such technology might lower our carbon footprint, but also how such technology may change how we live, work, play, and steward our planet.
Still, many research challenges lay ahead if we are to achieve these visions of a more sustainable future. For example: How might novel technologies improve user’s relationships with sustainable built environments? How do existing digital technologies and services need to change, in order to support and protect a more sustainable and less resource intensive future? And, can we more accurately and efficiently model, predict, and forecast the impacts of human activity on environmental systems?
Relevant topics of this special issue include but are not limited to the following:
- Applications in smart homes and smart grids
- Modeling climate change and setting policy for more sustainable futures
- Energy education and literacy
- Methods, techniques, and technologies for user studies into energy consumption
- Working with stakeholders in sustainability domains
- Technologies to support environmental monitoring and stewardship
- User experience in sustainable smart technologies and smart buildings
- Efficient data centers and machine learning applications
- The role of AI in smart grids and behavior change
- Security and privacy issues related to sustainable futures
- Estimates of the energy and environmental impact of particular digital services and devices, and methods for improving the quality of such life cycle assessments
The guest editors invite original and high-quality submissions addressing any aspect of this field, as long as the connection to pervasive computing and/or smart technologies is clear and central to the paper. Review or summary articles — for example, critical evaluations of the state of the art, or insightful analysis of established and upcoming technologies — may be accepted if they demonstrate academic rigor and relevance.
Articles submitted to IEEE Pervasive Computing should not exceed 6,000 words, including all text, the abstract, keywords, bibliography, biographies, and table text. The word count must include 250 words for each table and figure. References should be limited to at most 20 citations (40 for survey papers).
Note that the magazine always welcomes submissions into its regular queue that cover the role of computing in the physical world – as characterized by visions such as the Internet of Things and Ubiquitous Computing. Topics of interest are, e.g., hardware design, sensor networks, mobile systems, human-computer interaction, industrial design, machine learning, data science, but also societal issues including privacy and ethics. Simply select the “Regular” option when submitting at the submission site (submissions are possible at any time; no need for prior abstract by email).
