Since the beginning, Virtual Reality (VR) has been envisioned as a technology that engages multiple senses. Examples include Morton Heilig’s Sensorama simulator (Heilig, 1962) and Ivan E. Sutherland’s notion of the Ultimate Display described in the 1960s (Sutherland, 1965). In more than sixty years, technological development and scientific knowledge have predominantly focused Virtual and eXtended Reality (VR and XR) applications on the sense of sight and hearing. Despite their importance in everyday interaction, the other senses remain on the margins of VR and XR applications. The potential to include additional senses has been acknowledged and extensively explored in the literature.

This special issue aims to explore the area of multisensory experiences in XR technologies, which includes Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality, showcasing the current state of their implementation and utilization.

This special issue accepts contributions on the following topics:

  • Analysis of the current status of integrating multiple senses in XR technologies and applications, including the challenges and limitations that need to be addressed for achieving a comprehensive multisensory experience.
  • Exploration of the potential benefits and drawbacks of incorporating multisensory experiences in various fields, including applications such as but not limited to industry, healthcare, education, and entertainment.
  • Review of the state of the art in hardware and software technologies for integrating multiple senses, encompassing progress in haptic feedback, olfactory and taste stimulations.
  • Challenges and opportunities in integrating multisensory technologies with new and emerging input technologies.
  • Proposals for future research and development in multisensory XR, including new applications, use cases, and design strategies.
  • Ethical and social implications of incorporating additional senses into virtual, augmented, or extended reality environments, including issues related to accessibility, user safety, and privacy.

This special issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of multisensory integration in XR and identify key areas for future research and development. This will inspire innovations and advancements in the field, ultimately leading to more immersive and engaging experiences that fully utilize the potential of all human senses.

The special issue accepts contributions as original research, state-of-the-art reports, and future directions, with a preference for original research.
