IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications plans a July/August 2020 special issue on graphics and virtual environments for serious games, or computer games that do not have entertainment as their primary purpose. Over the past two decades the swift and dramatic emergence of serious games has revealed numerous challenges. These games share most of their infrastructure with entertainment games and other interactive virtual and augmented reality environments. They typically cover training simulations, computer graphics, and interactive techniques that improve the latter, but they also improve serious games. However, the transfer of existing and new technologies and solutions to the new application domain of serious games is not always straightforward.

There are many factors affecting the evolution of the domain and the broad variety of facets of virtual worlds and games that include computer graphics, software engineering, and human-computer interaction techniques. Among these are the technology-driven nature of new developments, which often does not take usability and applicability into account, and the convergence between new technologies such as games, visual effects, mobile devices, and AI techniques, which require multi- and cross-disciplinary development approaches.

In this context, we are seeking contributions that advance the state of the art in available computer graphics, HCI, and visualization techniques and technologies as well as virtual environment infrastructure to enable and support the development of serious games. Topics of interest for this special issue on Graphics and Virtual Environments for Serious Games include (but are not limited to):

– Game engines and interactive virtual environments
– Virtual world infrastructure
– Real-time computer graphics algorithms and techniques
– Procedural content generation for Interactive virtual environments
– AI applications for serious games
– Visualization techniques for serious games
– Mobile graphics
– Virtual and augmented reality
– Mobile games
– Human-computer interaction
– Affective computing
– Pervasive gaming
– Multimodal interfaces
– Brain-computer interfaces

The special issue welcomes general submissions on any of the above or closely related topics in the wider context of serious game development. We encourage original submissions, i.e. those that have not been previously (in any form) submitted and/or published in any other venue or that extensively contribute to the exploration of new related domains of research and development. Outstanding contributions that significantly extend existing work previously published in conferences will be considered, provided they contribute at least 50% new original work. Authors of such major added-value extensions will have to cite the original work and clearly identify the new content extending the original contribution.

Submission guidelines
Nondepartment articles submitted to IEEE CG&A should not exceed 8,000 words, including the main text, abstract, keywords, bibliography, biographies, and table text, where a page is approximately 800 words. Articles should include no more than 10 figures or images. Each 1/4 page figure, image, and table counts for approx. 200 words. Note that all tables, images, and illustrations must be appropriately scaled and legible; larger elements should be accounted for accordingly with respect to word count. Please limit the number of references to the most relevant and ensure to delineate your work from relevant past articles in CG&A. Furthermore, avoid an excessive number of references to published work that might only be marginally relevant. Visit the CG&A style, length, and supplemental guidelines at www.computer.org/publications/author-resources/peer-review/magazines.

Please submit your paper using the manuscript submission service at https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/cs-ieee. When uploading your paper, select the appropriate special issue title under the category “Manuscript Type.” Also, include complete contact information for all authors. If you have any questions about submitting your article, contact the peer review coordinator at cga-ma@computer.org.
