Art and Artificial Intelligence (Art + AI) has emerged as a vibrant new research area and artistic domain. Availability of large datasets and powerful computers has enabled the AI field to progress rapidly in recent years, stirring up conversation regarding ethics. AI generated art has come a long way from simple Neural Style Transfer, Generative Adversarial Networks and Variational Autoencoders to very powerful Transformer and Diffusion based models that are capable of generating stunning artwork and critiques of artwork.
The field spans computer science research into underlying algorithms and techniques, interactive technologies for artistic control, and new kinds of visual artworks and artistic styles employing these tools. Moreover, the area provides for rich collaboration opportunities between artists, scientists, and even researchers who span both art and science.
This special issue aims to share knowledge across these emerging fields of Art + AI. We invite research papers on artistic algorithms, art describing interdisciplinary works by artists, systems papers, and accessible, practical knowledge that practitioners and researchers alike can rely on in pursuing research on algorithms, workflows, tools, and ramifications of Art + AI. We seek high-quality papers that highlight challenges, elucidate solutions, demonstrate usefulness, and suggest guidelines for participating in an expanding Art + AI community.
