CLOSED Call for Papers: Special Section on Applied Software Aging and Rejuvenation in Computing Systems

Software aging is a problem of progressive degradation of performance and dependability in computer programs, especially those continuously executing for long periods of time. This phenomenon has been extensively studied for more than 20 years, as it affects many systems, from embedded devices to server software to critical systems.

Software rejuvenation, i.e., proactive restarts of applications (components/threads/tasks), reboots of VMs or machines, and failover to a replica, are the most prominent approaches to combat software aging. A variety of rejuvenation techniques, scheduling plans, scope, and granularity have been proposed for different application types and platforms.

The International Workshop on Software Aging and Rejuvenation (WoSAR) is the premier international venue to discuss the recent advances and discoveries in theoretical and practical aspects of software aging and rejuvenation research. Its 13th edition (WoSAR 2021), co-located with the 32nd International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering, provided a forum for researchers and practitioners to present their work on theoretical and experimental aspects of the software aging phenomenon as well as its mitigation via software rejuvenation techniques.

For this special section of the IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computing, we invite papers containing original research in the field of software aging and rejuvenation. Authors of papers presented at WoSAR 2021 may submit extended versions of their work. Topics of interest to this special section include (but are not limited to):

  • Theory and implementation of techniques to identify and address the progressive degradation of performability, availability, reliability, and scalability in software systems.
  • Software methodologies and their implementations for detection, localization, testing, and monitoring of aging-related bugs, errors, failures, information obsolescence, etc.
  • Real-life frameworks and their implementations for modeling, detecting, characterizing, and addressing the software aging phenomenon.
  • Design, evaluation, and implementation of rejuvenation techniques.
  • Hardware support to mitigate software aging in computing systems.
  • Industrial techniques for software rejuvenation.
  • Software aging and rejuvenation methodologies in support to other domains (e.g., anomaly detection, security intrusions, testing, fault localization, and online feedback control).

Important Dates

Deadline for submissions: March 15, 2022
First decision (accept/reject/revise, tentative): May 30, 2022
Submission of revised papers: July 30, 2022
Notification of final decision (tentative): September 30, 2022
Journal publication (tentative): first half of 2023

Please submit papers through the ScholarOne system, and be sure to select the special-section name. Please submit only full papers intended for review, not abstracts, to the ScholarOne portal.

Papers under review elsewhere are not acceptable for submission. Extended versions of published conference papers (to be included as part of the submission together with a summary of differences) are welcome, but there must be at least 40% new impacting technical/scientific material in the submitted journal version and there should be less than 50% verbatim similarity level as reported by a tool (such as CrossRef).
