cloudCloud computing is big data’s efficient workhorse. It lets us treat hardware as programmable objects, which necessitates a new way of thinking, and leads to a demand for new solutions and problem-solvers.

Due to the ever-growing and in-demand field of cloud computing, IEEE and IEEE Computer Society have assembled a variety of resources to assist in your understanding and growth within the industry.

See our top 7 tips and resources for a successful career in cloud computing:

1. Learn everything you need to know about careers in cloud computing with advice from an expert

Read our interview with Scott Campbell, senior director of technology and an instructor at Miami University’s College of Engineering and Computing, about cloud-computing careers. Campbell was previously director of computing labs for the school’s Computer Science and Software Engineering Department.

Campbell believes cloud computing is replacing all the roles in traditional data centers with console-management tools. He encourages applicants to have a strong systems, security, and networking background as well as scripting experience, which is key to making cloud computing scalable.

2. Identify tech advances and opportunities in the field of cloud computing

For this career article, we interviewed Michael Swift, associate professor in the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research covers interaction of operating systems and hardware, including devices and new processor/memory technologies. One of his major research projects involves investigating security issues in cloud computing.

Swift believes that beyond the move to the cloud that really started with Amazon Web Services, the move to server-less computing, such as Amazon Lambda Functions, Microsoft’s Azure Functions, and Google’s Cloud Functions represent a new way to design applications to scale seamlessly and quickly meet varied workload demands.

3. Discover the difference between cloud computing and edge computing – and unite the best of both worlds

There’s no doubt that today’s increasingly flung-decentralized data sources have become the Achilles heel of cloud-based systems. Edge computing and the cloud clearly serve different masters but are complementary architectures. Working symbiotically, they can provide highly effective IoT platforms.

Cloud and edge computing deliver what both worlds need: rapid response and big volume processing. Analytic algorithms can be created in the cloud and subsequently moved to edge device sensors that possess no analytical capabilities.

4. Read The Encyclopedia of Cloud Computing for a holistic view of the clouds

The Encyclopedia of Cloud Computing provides IT professionals, educators, researchers, and students with a compendium of cloud computing knowledge. Authored by a spectrum of subject matter experts in industry and academia, this unique publication, in a single volume, covers a wide range of cloud computing topics — concepts, principles, architecture, technology, security and privacy, regulatory compliance, applications, and social and legal aspects of cloud computing.

The book also outlines and discusses technological trends and developments, research opportunities, best practices, standards, and cloud adoption.

5. Explore the IEEE Cloud Computing Standards Committee, it’s mission, chair, working groups, and more

The IEEE Cloud Computing Standards Committee (CCSC) is chartered by the IEEE Computer Society Standards Activities Board to promote the development of standards in all aspects of the cloud computing ecosystem.

It facilitates the development and use of standards-based choices by cloud computing ecosystem participants (cloud vendors, service providers, and users) in areas such as cloud application interfaces, cloud portability interfaces, cloud management interfaces, cloud interoperability interfaces, cloud file formats, and cloud operation conventions.

6. Earn a certificate of achievement in our online course, Cloud Computing In the Business Environment

Managers are often faced with having to decide if, and how to upgrade their IT infrastructure, and how to pay for it. In an environment of tight budgets and soaring hardware and software costs, they are also looking for alternatives to making huge investments that will have to be upgraded again and again. The Cloud can be that solution. Managers need information to make intelligent decisions however.

Questions pertaining to Cloud economics, security, regulation and governance, metrics and migration are introduced and discussed. In the final analysis, managers must be able to answer key questions – is the Cloud the right place for my IT infrastructure and data? Is it a good business decision? How do I migrate to the Cloud? This course introduces and discusses these and other key concepts.

7. Attend the virtual IEEE International Conference on Cloud Computing in Emerging Markets (CCEM 2020)

This research driven innovation conference has established itself as a unique conference that combines top notch peer-reviewed research papers (acceptance rate less than 10%), invited talks from renowned industry and government leaders, posters and demos showcasing latest innovations, a startup showcase highlighting the vibrant and fast growing business ecosystem around cloud, tutorials on cutting edge topics, and a doctoral symposium featuring some of the deep research topics being pursued by academic leaders.

Attend the Virtual Event from the 4th – 7th of November 2020.
