Teresa Doran to Receive 2020 IEEE CS Hans Karlsson Award

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 04 March 2020 - Ms. Teresa (Terry) Doran has been selected to receive the 2020 IEEE Computer Society Hans Karlsson Award, “for extended dedication to harmonization of systems and software engineering life cycle process standards.”

The award is given annually to the most outstanding team leader in the field of computer engineering standards in recognition of outstanding skills and dedication to diplomacy, team facilitation and joint achievement in the areas where individual aspirations, corporate competition, and organizational rivalry would otherwise be counter to the common good.

Doran has served as editor for the most complex and fundamental standardization projects in the field of systems and software engineering. She was the long-standing editor for IEEE 1220 (now ISO/IEC/IEEE 24748-4, System Engineering Guide) for its alignment with ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288, System Engineering Life Cycle Processes. Under her leadership, ISO/IEC/IEEE 24748-4 was transformed to focus on Systems Engineering planning, including contents and format for a Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP). As editor for ISO/IEC/IEEE 12207, she led the editorial team to full process alignment of 12207 with 15288, starting with the 2008 versions and continuing as editor of ISO/IEC/IEEE 12207 in its 2017 version. As Life Cycle Process Harmonization Advisory Group co-chair, she worked with that group to analyze and recommend suitable frameworks for integrating sets of software and IT systems domain process standards.

Within the IEEE Computer Society, Doran leads the Working Group for Life Cycle Processes, which oversees 24 current and completed projects, all joint projects with ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC7, Systems and Software Engineering.

The award consisting of a plaque and $2,000 honorarium will be presented at the Computer Society’s annual awards dinner and presentation to be held on Wednesday evening, 27 May 2020 at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner during the IEEE Computer Society Board of Governors meeting.
