Connecting Enterprise Software Architecture, Research, and Community: A Conversation with Siva Rama Krishna Varma Bayyavarapu

My name is Siva Rama Krishna Varma Bayyavarapu, and I am a Lead Software Engineer at Docusign. I have more than 16 years of experience building enterprise software, with a focus on distributed systems, SaaS integrations, cloud platforms, and service reliability. I earned my M.Tech. from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Anantapur and now live in Greenwood, Indiana, with my family.

I am an IEEE Senior Member and currently serve as Secretary of the IEEE Computer Society Central Indiana Chapter, Chair of the Section’s Student Activities Committee, and Vice Chair of the Central Indiana SIGHT Group. I also mentor professionals through ADPList and advise small-business owners through SCORE on technology decisions and practical technical direction.

What technical accomplishment are you most proud of, and what was the hardest part?

I am especially proud of helping establish service health as a consistent engineering practice across multiple teams and projects. About seven years ago at Salesforce Marketing Cloud, I was part of the initial Vteam that helped define and launch the practice. We encouraged teams to look beyond individual service availability and evaluate whether the customer’s complete workflow was healthy. I later applied this approach in other projects by helping teams define service indicators and reliability objectives, establish structured reviews, and prioritize improvements based on customer impact.

The hardest part was building adoption across teams with different systems, priorities, and levels of operational maturity. I helped clarify the value, establish ownership and meaningful measures, and create a regular review cadence.  Over time, this became part of the normal engineering rhythm rather than a one-time exercise.

What is one complex architectural challenge you have tackled at Docusign?

One of the most complex challenges I tackled was the design and delivery of the Docusign CLM Connector for SAP Ariba. The goal was to connect procurement workflows in SAP Ariba with agreement creation, negotiation, review, and approval processes in Docusign CLM.

The platforms have different data models, workflow lifecycles, and security requirements. We had to link Ariba contract workspaces with CLM agreements, synchronize documents and metadata, exchange workflow status, and preserve an audit history. The connector used Docusign’s IAM platform and App Center capabilities and required coordinated changes across several systems.

I led key parts of the technical design and delivery, coordinated dependencies among internal and external teams, and helped resolve issues that could have affected the launch. We delivered the capability within the committed timeline, extending Docusign’s agreement-management capabilities into procurement and source-to-pay workflows.

How do research and peer review improve your industry work?

Research and peer review make me more disciplined in evaluating technical ideas. Writing papers requires me to examine evidence carefully, compare alternatives honestly, state my assumptions explicitly, and acknowledge limitations. Reviewing for IEEE Access, Data in Brief, MethodsX, and international conferences reinforces that same discipline every time I sit down with someone else's work.

That habit carries directly into architecture discussions at work. I ask how a proposed approach behaves under failure, whether it can actually scale, and how it will be monitored and operated in production. My industry experience, in turn, helps me judge whether a promising research idea can hold up outside a controlled environment, in a large enterprise system.

How do you choose IEEE program topics, and which initiative stands out?

I choose topics by paying attention to where technology is moving and what professionals need to understand to keep pace. Working directly on enterprise systems helps me identify where practical knowledge may be falling behind industry adoption.

The initiative that stands out most is the IEEE Computer Society Tech Talks program, which I initiated and continue to lead. I work directly with experienced industry leaders to shape sessions around real projects, real implementation challenges, and lessons learned the hard way, rather than abstract theory. My goal is to bring those practical insights to professionals and students, both locally and across IEEE Region 4 bridging the gap between emerging technology trends and the knowledge professionals need to apply them responsibly in practice.

I see these activities as connected rather than competing. Engineering exposes me to real problems, research makes me examine them carefully, speaking forces me to explain ideas clearly enough for others to use, and mentoring keeps me aware of the challenges others face.

On top of that, I contribute to technical program committees, chair conference sessions, review research, judge technical awards and student hackathons, and evaluate IEEE Senior Member applications. My professional responsibilities always come first, and I deliberately reserve regular blocks of time for these activities.

What advice would you give an engineer seeking technical depth and wider recognition?

Engineers should not shy away from taking ownership during high-impact production incidents. These situations reveal how a system behaves across services, dependencies, failure paths, and operational processes. They expose gaps that may not appear during design and testing and provide direct evidence of customer impact. Those lessons should be brought back into the architecture and used to improve what the team builds next.

Technical depth grows through end-to-end ownership. Wider recognition comes from making those lessons useful through writing, research, speaking, peer review, standards work, and mentoring. Recognition should follow sustained contributions that improve systems and help others.

How has IEEE Computer Society helped you throughout your career?

The IEEE Computer Society has given me opportunities to contribute beyond my day-to-day work through publishing, peer reviewing, speaking, organizing technical programs, and mentoring. The most meaningful shift for me was moving from attending activities to helping create and lead them, using my industry experience to support professional development, student learning, and practical technology education.
