Call For Papers: Special Issue on Computing and Communication in Outer Space

IEEE Computer seeks submissions for this upcoming special issue.

Important Dates

  • Abstracts due: 15 July 2026
  • Submissions deadline: 1 October 2026
  • Publication: June 2027

Lowering costs of space transportation are enabling the humanization of outer space.  This will include the expansion of materials harvesting, manufacturing, and transportation in space. Much of the “human activity” in space will be done using physical AI (autonomous or semi-autonomous robots) and, because of the latency in communicating with Earth, success will require computing and communication nearby, in outer space. This special issue will explore the key requirements for computing and communication to support industrial development, human exploration, and habitation in space. The successful expansion of these activities will require the construction of distributed data centers and attendant communication systems that will coordinate data center outer space nodes and the operations they are assisting, including communication with the Earth and locations in outer space.

Topics of interest include:

  • Data center design for outer space use—including energy requirements, heat dissipation, size, and distribution of data center nodes
  • Computing, memory, and storage for high radiation environments
  • Physical AI in outer space
  • Communication systems in outer space—including laser point-to-point communication
  • The Interplanetary Internet
  • Applications for outer space data centers
  • Cybersecurity for space

Submission Guidelines:

*ABSTRACTS – Authors, please submit your abstracts to the Guest Editors via the linked email addresses below by 15 July 2026.

For author information and guidelines on submission criteria, visit the Author’s Information Page. Please submit papers through the IEEE Author Portal and be sure to select the special issue or special section name. Manuscripts should not be published or currently submitted for publication elsewhere. Please submit only full papers intended for review, not abstracts.

Articles should be written for a broad technical audience and focus on clarity, insight, and impact. Submissions that combine technical depth with practical relevance and cross-disciplinary perspectives are particularly encouraged. All submissions will undergo peer review consistent with the editorial standards of IEEE Computer Magazine.

In addition to submitting your paper to Computer, you are also encouraged to upload the data related to your paper to IEEE DataPort. IEEE DataPort is IEEE's data platform that supports the storage and publishing of datasets while also providing access to thousands of research datasets. Uploading your dataset to IEEE DataPort will strengthen your paper and will support research reproducibility. Your paper and the dataset can be linked, providing a good opportunity for you to increase the number of citations you receive. Data can be uploaded to IEEE DataPort prior to submitting your paper or concurrent with the paper submission. Thank you!
