Episode 25 | IIT Madras CS Cohort of 1998, Part 2

By Indy Gupta on
February 17, 2022

ICS Ep 24ICS Ep 24Together in one room, seven graduates from IIT Madras (Chennai) India, Computer Science and Engineering Bachelors’ degree 1998 cohort. In part two, we discuss:

  •   How did those from small towns/villages succeed at IIT JEE (often called the toughest exam in the world)?
  •   How did immigration change our outlook on life?
  •   Is India's caste system prevalent in US Silicon Valley?
  •   Also, plans to return permanently to India, the tendency to compare oneself to others, and a lot more!

Just in case you missed it, listen to part 1 of the conversation. Though, it's not needed to enjoy this current episode.

Among the guests: three are startup founders, three are industry long-timers (and the host, Indy Gupta, is a Professor).  Among them, four have PhDs and three have a Master's from MIT, Stanford, Cornell, Wisconsin, UNCx2, and UIUC. Together, these seven individuals comprise nearly 25% (7 out of 30) of those from the IIT Madras CS 1998 cohort.

In 1994, all these individuals wrote the IIT JEE 1994 (IIT Joint Entrance Exam), considered one of the toughest exams in the world. In 1994, only those ranked in the top 48 in the entire nation of India, among 200,000 candidates, were admitted to IIT Madras’ Computer Science batch.

This episode is the second of 3 episodes focused on India. These episodes will be released throughout February 2022.

Featuring: Balaji Srinivasan, Praveen Patnala, Ramesh Chandra, Rajasekar Krishnamurthy, Shankar Ponnekanti, Sriram Sellappa
