Bowen Hui

Award Recipient

Featured Image

Dr. Bowen Hui is a Professor of Teaching in Computer Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Okanagan campus. She is committed to personalized learning and aspires to offer students the same opportunities that her own mentors once provided to her. She encourages students to take ownership of their education and supports them in shaping their learning experiences around their individual interests and goals. Over the past 13 years, Dr. Hui has supervised 128 Directed Studies projects and Honours theses and supported 41 paid undergraduate research assistantships, over and above her full teaching load. Her most rewarding teaching moments come from working closely with students, where they exchange ideas, explore new questions together, and learning from one another. Through this work, she has helped students develop confidence, research skills, and a sense of belonging within the computing discipline.

As a strong advocate for mentorship and community building, Dr. Hui is particularly dedicated to supporting students from underrepresented and minority backgrounds. She has established several initiatives to strengthen student belonging, including a faculty-wide peer-mentoring program and a first-year computer science programming club. She is also actively involved in outreach programs, developing engaging materials and hands-on activities that introduce young children to computational thinking and problem-solving.

Dr. Hui’s research focuses on innovative educational technologies and learning analytics that support student engagement and success. Her work draws on her doctoral research in probabilistic user modeling for intelligent user interfaces and applies these techniques to better understand and support learning processes in computer science education. More recently, her research has explored algorithms for balanced team formation and tools for monitoring equitable collaboration in student teams, with particular attention to gender dynamics. Dr. Hui’s dedication has been recognized through multiple prestigious awards, including the UBC Killam Teaching Award and the Canadian CSCan/InfoCan Excellence in Teaching Award. Through her teaching, research, and service, she strives to advance innovative and inclusive approaches to computer science education.
