Call For Papers: Special Issue on Software for Quantum Computing

IEEE Computer seeks submissions for this upcoming special issue.

  • Submissions deadline: 1 February 2027
  • Publication: November 2027

Quantum computing is rapidly progressing from exploration to practical implementation, driven by advances in hardware and increasing industrial investment. However, the success of quantum technologies depends critically on the development of robust, scalable, and accessible software ecosystems.

This special issue focuses on the emerging field of software for quantum computing, encompassing programming models, compilers, tools, and systems that enable the effective use of quantum hardware and pave the way to large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computers. We invite contributions that address the challenges of bridging the gap between quantum hardware and real-world applications, and that push forward the state of the art in quantum software engineering.

Submissions should present innovative research, empirical studies, or practical experiences that contribute to the design, development, and evaluation of quantum software systems.

Topics of Interest

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Quantum programming languages and abstractions
  • Quantum software development kits (SDKs) and toolchains
  • Compilers and optimizations for quantum circuits
  • Hybrid classical–quantum programming models
  • Software engineering methodologies for quantum systems
  • Testing, verification, and validation of quantum programs
  • Debugging and profiling tools for quantum applications
  • Performance modeling and benchmarking of quantum software
  • Resource estimation and circuit optimization techniques
  • Software for fault-tolerant quantum computers
  • Middleware and runtime systems for quantum computing
  • Interoperability standards and cross-platform frameworks
  • Error mitigation and noise-aware software techniques

Submission Guidelines:

For author information and guidelines on submission criteria, visit the Author’s Information Page. Article templates for Word and LaTeX are available; use of a template is recommended, but not required.

Please submit papers through the IEEE Author Portal and be sure to select the special issue or special section name. Manuscripts should not be published or currently submitted for publication elsewhere. Please submit only full papers intended for review, not abstracts.  All submissions will undergo peer review consistent with the editorial standards of IEEE Computer Magazine.

Authors are encouraged to clearly articulate the novelty, technical contributions, and implications of their work.  Both research contributions and system/experience papers are welcome.
