IEEE Computer Society Launches CS Assist to Support Conference Attendees in Addressing Ethics-Based Concerns

By IEEE Computer Society Team on
October 27, 2022

CS AssistCS AssistEthical practices serve as the foundation for fair, equitable, and productive scientific collaboration and advancement, and the IEEE Computer Society (CS) adheres to the global IEEE Code of Ethics. In fact, since its founding more than 75 years ago, IEEE CS has upheld the highest standards of ethical practices among its leaders, members, authors, volunteers, event attendees, and staff.

In today’s environment, innovations enabled by computer science and engineering have opened the door for robust discussions of ethics in subjects ranging from artificial intelligence (AI) to data privacy and beyond, and while the ethical management of these technological advances requires a new level of attention, so too, do the human factors at play.

With this in mind, IEEE CS has formed Assist, the IEEE Computer Society Committee to Assist in Reporting Ethics and Conduct Violations. This committee will support the conference community in referring misconduct concerns, including harassment, discrimination, bullying, and other ethical policy violations to the IEEE Ethics Reporting Line or other authorities. CS Assist provides confidential support for IEEE CS members who might be victims or witnesses of misconduct.

The International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis 2022 (SC22) will be the first conference employing CS Assist. For more information on the committee’s availability and role at the event, contact assist@computer.org.

IEEE CS stands firm in its commitment to providing a safe, productive, and welcoming environment to all conference, event, and meeting participants; takes allegations of misconduct at conferences seriously; and does not tolerate unprofessional behavior including, but not limited to, harassment, discrimination, and bullying. CS Assist will enhance existing initiatives, providing an additional outlet for support. Learn more about CS Assist and how to access services.
