Mei-Ling Shyu

Award Recipient

Featured ImageDr. Mei-Ling Shyu has been an Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), University of Miami (UM) since June 2005. Prior to that, she was an Assistant Professor in ECE at UM dating from January 2000. She received her Ph.D. degree from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1999, and her three master degrees from Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Restaurant, Hotel, Institutional, and Tourism Management, all from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, USA. Her research interests include multimedia data mining, management & retrieval, and security. She has authored and co-authored more than 200 technical papers published in various prestigious journals, book chapters, and refereed conference proceedings.

Dr. Shyu received 2012 Provost Research Award from UM, the Best Published Journal Article in IJMDEM for 2010 Award, the Best Student Paper Award with her student from the Third IEEE International Conference on Semantic Computing in 2009, the Johnson A. Edosomwan Scholarly Productivity Award from College of Engineering at UM in 2007, and the Excellence in the Research and Application of Advanced Computing and Internet Technologies to Further NOAA's Service to the Nation Metadata Management Award from NOAA TECH 2004. She serves as an Associate Editor for several journals including IEEE SMC Transactions, Part C: Applications and Reviews, and on the editorial board of many other journals. Dr. Shyu has been a guest editor of many journal special issues, a program chair/vice chair of more than 20 IEEE and ACM international conferences, symposiums, and workshops, and a member of organizing committees and technical program committees for more than ninety international meetings. She is the Vice Chair of the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Multimedia Computing, and a steering committee member of IEEE International Conference on Multimedia & Expo. She is a Fellow of SIRI.
