Kirk W. Cameron is the Boeing Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and Founding Director of the Institute for Advanced Computing at Virginia Tech. An internationally recognized researcher in high-performance computing (HPC), computer systems, and energy-efficient computing, he has spent more than 25 years advancing the performance, efficiency, and sustainability of computing technologies.

Cameron pioneered energy measurement and management for HPC, beginning with PowerPack in 2001–2002, his landmark power-aware computing framework presented at SC04. Through over 200 award-winning publications, presentations, and exhibits, his research established foundational techniques for measuring, modeling, and optimizing energy consumption across processors, memory, accelerators, and parallel applications, helping establish energy efficiency as a fundamental consideration in computing system design.

In 2006, Cameron co-founded the Green500, transforming how supercomputer energy efficiency is measured and recognized worldwide. He contributed as a founding member to SPECpower, SERT, and ENERGY STAR server efficiency standards, helping establish industry practices for evaluating computing energy consumption. As founder of MiserWare, he commercialized energy-saving technologies, including grano.la, used by more than 500,000 people in over 160 countries.

His research is regularly featured in major media outlets, including The New York Times, TIME, Bloomberg Businessweek, The Economist, Nature, and others. His interactive computing exhibits have engaged more than 250,000 visitors at venues including the Smithsonian, SIGGRAPH, and the New York Hall of Science.

An IEEE Fellow and ACM Distinguished Scientist, Cameron has received the NSF CAREER Award and DOE Early Career Principal Investigator Award. He previously directed Virginia Tech’s stack@cs Center for Computer Systems, building a nationally ranked (USN&WR #26) research program, and has held senior university leadership positions advancing interdisciplinary research, graduate education, and industry partnerships. His current research extends his pioneering work to the energy challenges of emerging AI and HPC systems.
