Doris Carver

Doris Carver is Associate Vice Chancellor for Research & Graduate Studies and Professor of Computer Science at Louisiana State University. She previously served as Associate Commissioner of Sponsored Programs at the Louisiana Board of Regents. She received a B.S. in Mathematics from Carson-Newman College, an M.S. in Mathematics from the University of Tennessee, and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Texas A&M University.

Her research interests include formal methods for software development, software development environments, systems reengineering, and model transformations. She has published in numerous journals and conference proceedings. She was elected a Fellow of the IEEE in 1998 for "contributions to the field of software engineering", and she was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advance of Science in 2002.

Carver currently serves as a member of the IEEE Computer Society Executive Committee and the Society's Planning Committee. She also serves as editor-in-chief of Computer, having previously served as its associate editor-in-chief.

Carver has served the Society in numerous venues. She was the 1998 President of the Society. She served as Chair of the Society's Fellows Committee, having earlier served as the Vice-Chair. She chaired the Society's Nomination Committee and Membership Committee. During her tenure as Chair of the Planning Committee, she led the development of the Strategic plan "Evolving the World's Computer Society." Her awards service includes Chair of the Computer Entrepreneur Award Committee and the Taylor Booth Award Committee. She was a member of the Board of Governors and was Vice President for the Educational Activities Board. She served as a member of the Publications Board, Press Activities Board and the Conferences and Tutorials Board. She was a lecturer in Society's Distinguished Visitor Program. She has been heavily involved with curricular activities on behalf of the Society. She was a member of the Steering Committee of the IEEE Computer Society/ACM Computing Curricula 2001 Committee, the Steering Committee for the IEEE Computer Society/ACM Software Engineering Coordinating Committee, and Co-Chair of the Joint ACM/IEEE Task Force on Software Engineering Education.

She also served as Alternate Director for the Computer Science Accreditation Board. She has been a member of the Computing Research Association (CRA) Board of Directors, CRA Membership Committee, CRA External Awards Committee and CRA Recruitment and Retention Committee.

In addition to her service to the Computer Society, her service to the IEEE includes serving as a member of the IEEE Board of Directors and the IEEE Executive Committee. She was a member of the IEEE Nominations and Appointments Committee. She was chair of the IEEE IT Ad Hoc Committee, and a member of the IEEE Presidential Blue Ribbon Committee.

In her role as a Professor, she maintains a focus on students. She received the LSU Foundation Distinguished Teaching Award and the LSU College of Basic Sciences Graduate Teaching Award. She currently maintains an active research group, and she takes pride in having graduated numerous PhD students who are working successfully in academia and industry.
