Azzedine Boukerche is a Distinguished University Professor and holds a Senior Canada Research Chair Tier-1 position at the University of Ottawa, Canada. He is a Fellow of IEEE (Computer Society), a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, and Fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a Fellow of Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association. He is the founding director of the PARADISE Research Laboratory, and DIVA Strategic Research Network at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), uOttawa. Prior to this, he was a Faculty at the University of North Texas, a Senior Scientist at the Simulation Sciences Division, Metron Corp., located in San Diego, and he spent a year at the JPL/NASA California Institute of Technology, where he contributed to a project centered on specification and verification of the software used to control interplanetary spacecraft operated by JPL/NASA Laboratory.
Prof. Boukerche is one of the pioneer researchers to establish an innovative body of research in smart, autonomous and connected vehicles and AI-based vehicular edge/cloud networking and computing. He has led and founded -way back in the mid 2000’s- DIVA, the first ever NSERC strategic research network in Canada to design and develop innovative 5G networking algorithms and scalable AI-based computer multimedia software for smart cars to assist autonomous driving. At the time, technologies for the creation of software and networking protocols for autonomous and connected cars were still in its infancy and had not kept pace with the ability to deploy edge/cloud computing paradigm. Through DIVA, Prof. Boukerche has pioneered 5G and beyond networking algorithms and protocols for smart vehicular networks, as well as designed innovative mobile intelligent edge/cloud computing framework, concepts, algorithms and systems – addressing significant gaps in autonomous vehicles and 5G vehicular edge/cloud computing service-enabled endeavor. He has published several research papers in these areas, and he received 18 Best Research Paper Awards from Top-Tier-1 ACM/IEEE Conferences.
Prof. Boukerche has been serving as an Associate Editor of several journals including ACM Computing Surveys, IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing, IEEE TVT, Elsevier Ad-Hoc Networks, Wiley International Journal of Wireless Communication and Mobile Computing, Wiley Security and Communication Network Journal, Elsevier Pervasive and Mobile Computing Journal, IEEE Wireless Communication Magazine, and Elsevier Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing. He served as the General Chair for numerous IEEE/ACM sponsored International Conference, a Steering Committee chair for the IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Computing. He has served as Vice Chair of the IEEE Computer Society Fellow Committee, and the IEEE VT Fellow Committee. He is also a regular IEEE Fellow Committee member of the IEEE Computer Society. He also served on the hiring committee for EiC for ACM Computing Surveys, and IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Computing. He was the past EiC for ACM-ICPS. He is also the author of three bestseller textbooks on Ad hoc Networking, Wireless Sensor Networks, and Wireless Communication and Mobile Computing. He has been frequently invited as Keynote Speaker for various international IEEE/ACM sponsored conferences and several national and international academic institutions.
Prof. Boukerche is the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the University of Ottawa Researcher Award, the Premier of Ontario Premier Research Excellence Award, the Ontario Distinguished Researcher Award, the G. Glinski Research Excellence Award, the IEEE Computer Society Golden Core Award, the IEEE Canada C. Gotlieb Computer Medal Award, the IEEE ComSoc TC-AHST-IoT Exceptional Technical Achievement and Recognition Award, the IEEE ComSoc TC-SoftCom Technical and Leaderships Award, the IEEE Computer Society TCPP Exceptional Technical and Leadership Award.
