Quantum computers offer theoretical exponential acceleration for scientific problems, but their adoption has been limited by software immaturity and high barriers to entry. Democratizing this technology requires an inextricable, bidirectional integration with High-Performance Computing (HPC): quantum accelerators must physically and conceptually merge into classical HPC environments, while the resource-intensive simulation and compilation of quantum algorithms simultaneously demand classical HPC power. Bridging this gap requires providing the broader scientific community with a realistic roadmap, managing the transition from the Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) era to fault-tolerant, error-corrected systems.
This special quantum-themed issue of CiSE aims to inform and educate the scientific and engineering communities on both the promises and practical challenges of quantum computing. Our core objective is to anchor general readers with a solid foundation in the current state of the field through comprehensive review articles covering quantum algorithms, hardware milestones, and software environments.
Beyond foundational overviews, we invite submissions on advanced topics, including but not limited to:
Potential Applications: Quantum machine learning, Hamiltonian simulation, quantum chemistry, drug discovery, and quantum optimization.
Practical Challenges: Quantum Error Correction (QEC), error mitigation, and error suppression.
Quantum Technologies: Superconducting qubits, trapped ions, neutral atoms, topological qubits, and boson-based systems.
Software & Development: Frameworks, compilation, programming paradigms, and circuit simulation.
Quantum Communication: Quantum teleportation, quantum key distribution (QKD), and quantum cryptography.
