IEEE Transactions on Computers

TC celebrates its 60th anniversary!

We asked editorial board members to reflect on TC's past 60 years. Below is what they had to say.

“I feel honored to have been asked to participate in the celebration of the 60th year of our flagship publication, IEEE Transactions on COMPUTERS. I still remember being an undergraduate student in Paris, signing up with the IEEE Computer Society and receiving my first copy of IEEE TC , checking out with no small sense of awe the articles written by some of the pioneers and giants in our field. I can say that they truly inspired me to pursue a career in this field and to emulate them in my small way. Since then, our publication has changed quite a bit: for example, as I had the honor and privilege of becoming its Editor-in-Chief in January 1999, I received from the outgoing EIC no fewer than five boxes full of pending submissions. When I handed the baton to the next EIC in December 2002, I had nothing to send to the incoming EIC! Indeed, in the meantime, the process had been entirely computerized. And we are experiencing the continuation of this trend: the publication is now mostly on-line and soon researchers will read IEEE TC on a Kindle, an IPad, etc. Who knows what great things we will witness in the coming decades? As the technology our research has helped to create continues reaching other researchers and practitioners in ever new ways, on what devices will we be receiving our articles? In what way will the increasingly fast dissemination of ideas inspire them in turn? I for one can't wait to see. Happy birthday, TC !”

—Jean-Luc Gaudiot
Past Editor in Chief and current TOC Chair

“It was my great honor to have an opportunity to serve as EIC of IEEE TC from July 1986 to December 1990 (on the eve of its 40th Anniversary). Twenty more years have since passed, and we are celebrating its 60th Anniversary in 2011. As the great-grandfather of all publications in the computer field in the world, TC has been the flagship publication of the IEEE Computer Society since the Society was established in 1946. A great number of most important and influential papers in the computer field have been published in TC over the past 60 years and the number is increasing every year! My hearty congratulations!!”

—Ming T. (Mike) Liu
Past Editor in Chief
July 1986 to December 1990

IEEE Transactions on COMPUTERS is the flagship publication of the IEEE Computer Society. I am proud to serve the Computer Science and Engineering community through my editorial responsibilities in this journal. I believe that the 60th year celebration of IEEE Transactions on COMPUTERS should be done with showing our gratitude to the great many pioneers who have brought on the blazing evolution path of computers in the last 6 decades, and by publishing some of the most important papers of the last 60 years in a retrospective issue. My congratulations to Albert for taking on the responsibility, and my sincere thanks and gratitude to Fabrizio who has shown leadership, and forward thinking in keeping the IEEE TC as one of the most important IEEE Journals.”

—Sandeep K. Shukla
Associate Professor
Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
Director of the Center for Embedded Systems for Critical Applications
Virginia Polytechnic and State University

“Since the publication of my first ever technical paper in its April 1972 issue, I have viewed IEEE TC as a standard-bearer of excellence in my specialty area. The emergence of more focused IEEE journals has diverted some of my work to those other forums, but I am still honored each time a paper of mine is accepted in this now 60-year-old publication, which owes its excellence to a long line of distinguished editors, editorial board members, support staff, and, of course, authors. It is indeed an honor for me to be associated with IEEE TC as an author and as an area editor.”

—Behrooz Parhami

“The field of computing has gone through many changes during the last 60 years. The success of IEEE TC lies with the excellent contributions from the authors and the dedicated services by the Editor-in-Chief, Associated Editors and Administrative staff members. Let's continue to strive for such success for the next 60 years!!”

—Professor Dhabaleswar Panda
Ohio State University.

“Congratulations to the IEEE Transactions on COMPUTERS as it completes 60 years of excellence! Certainly a journal I have cherished publishing in and serving in the editorial board. I am also proud to own some early hard copy prints from years before I was born (thanks to Professor Harvey Cragon for letting me grab some of the early issues from his office when he was retiring). I have enjoyed my collection. Best Wishes to IEEE-TC to maintain the high level of excellence!”

—Lizy Kurian John
B. N. Gafford Professor of Electrical Engineering
UT Austin

“I can't believe it has been 60 years! Thanks to the mind-numbing advances in computing and communications, these 60 years have changed the world. Amazingly, the pioneering IEEE Transactions on COMPUTERS has been there from the beginning with tremendous success in archiving seminal research and providing a very well respected knowledge base with significant impact on almost all areas of computing and communications. Indeed, it is a great honor to have been part of the editorial board under the leadership of Professor Lombari who, admirably and consistently, marshaled and challenged the board and authors to maintain TC 's well- deserved top ranking in a challenging and ever-expanding field of publications. I look forward to serving on the board under professor Zomaya's leadership launching the next glorious 60 years. Happy 60th anniversary TC !”

—Mohamed Eltoweissy
Chief Scientist
Secure Cyber Systems
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

“Happy Birthday TC ! Over the years, TC has evolved into the flagship peer-review publication of a huge research community – I am sure far larger than its original founders in the IRE could have imagined. As a result, each sub-area has produced its own peer-review conferences and journals, but TC has remained as a central repository hosting high quality contributions across a broad spectrum of computing. A venerable journal, TC 's age outnumbers mine by a good factor, and I have been delighted to be associated with the journal over the past few years of its recent existence. It has been a pleasure working with Fabrizio, and I am sure that TC will continue to flourish under Al's leadership.”

—Dr. George A Constantinides
PhD, FBCS, SMIEEE, Reader in Digital Systems, Imperial College London

“For 60 years, IEEE TC has been making excellent contributions to the progress of computing as a prestigious journal of the IEEE. It richly deserves a big celebration for its achievements. Best wishes to IEEE TC to continue to contribute to the community and the world as a leading journal with its excellence.”

—Sang H. Son
Professor of Computer Science,

“As an undergraduate student, my dream was to become able to read and understand IEEE Transactions on COMPUTERS papers. As a PhD student, my dream was to publish my first IEEE Transactions on COMPUTERS paper. As a young faculty, my dream was to continue publishing in IEEE Transactions on COMPUTERS, and maybe join the IEEE Transactions on COMPUTERS' editorial board. IEEE Transactions on COMPUTERS has inspired scientists in computing to capture their best ideas for 60 years now. I am more than confident that it will continue inspiring us for many years to come.”

—Dimitris Gizopoulos
Associate Professor at the Department of Informatics,
University of Piraeus, Greece

“IEEE TC has been one of my favorite journals since about 1973, when it published my paper "On the Precision Attainable with Various Floating-Point Number Systems" [IEEE TC , vol. C-22, no. 6 (1973), pp. 601-607]. This paper had previously been rejected by Communications of the ACM, possibly for political reasons, since it implicitly criticised the base-16 arithmetic that was common on IBM mainframes at the time. Time has proved me correct. Nowadays, who builds base-16 floating point arithmetic units?”

—Richard Brent, FIEEE
Distinguished Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science,
Australian National University
