CS Publications Rank High in SE Category

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 30 July, 2010 – The IEEE Computer Society publishes five of the Top 10 magazines and journals in the computer science software engineering category, according to the latest Journal Citation Reports.

IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering was the top-ranked journal in the computer science software engineering category in the annual reports, which define journal performance across disciplines and institutions worldwide. IEEE Micro and IEEE Internet Computing ranked fourth and fifth respectively in the category, while IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics ranked eighth, and Computer tenth.

TSE also ranked among the top 10 publications in the JCR’s engineering, electrical, and electronics category. In addition, its impact factor rose to 3.75 in 2009, up from 3.569 in 2008. The bi-monthly TSE covers theoretical results and empirical studies affecting the construction, analysis, or management of software.

Two Computer Society publications were among the Top 10 in the telecommunications category. IEEE Pervasive Computing and IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing ranked third and fourth respectively. In addition, Pervasive Computing earned an impact factor of 3.079, up from 2.615 the previous year. The quarterly magazine offers research articles, case studies, product reviews, and conference reports within the field of pervasive and ubiquitous computing.

Three Computer Society publications were among the Top 10 in the computer science hardware and architecture category. IEEE Micro ranked second, Computer ranked eighth, and IEEE Transactions on Dependable and Secure Computing ranked tenth.

In the computer science artificial intelligence category, IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence ranked third and IEEE Intelligent Systems ranked seventh. TPAMI in 2009 held its position as the most-cited Computer Society journal, with 22,851 citations in 2009. The monthly TPAMI covers traditional areas of computer vision and image understanding, all traditional areas of pattern analysis and recognition, and selected areas of machine intelligence.

"The volunteers, authors, and staff of the IEEE Computer Society work hard to ensure the quality and integrity of our publications,” said Evan Butterfield, the Computer Society’s director of products and services. “It's good to see that work validated, and to know that researchers find our content useful."

The impact factor for Computer, the Society’s flagship magazine, increased to 2.205, up from 2.093 in 2008 -- the highest level since 2000. Several other Computer Society publications also showed impact factor improvements in 2009 over the previous year:

IEEE Micro—3.205, up from 2.565
IEEE Transactions on Knowledge & Data Engineering—2.285, up from 2.236
IEEE Intelligent Systems—3.144, up from 2.278
IEEE Internet Computing—3.108, up from 2.309
IEEE-ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics—2.246, up from 2.093
IEEE Security & Privacy—1.172, up from 0.803
IEEE Design & Test of Computers—1.798, from 1.785

The Journal Citation Reports metrics have come to define journal performance across disciplines and institutions worldwide. JCR presents quantitative data that provide an objective way to evaluate the world’s leading journals and their impact and influence in the global research community. By compiling articles’ cited references, JCR helps to measure research influence and impact at the journal and category levels, and shows the relationship between citing and cited journals.

JCR covers more than 8,000 of the world’s most highly cited, peer-reviewed journals from 66 nations. The production of the 2008 JCR included the analysis of more than 44 million cited references from journals, and proceedings.
