The 2012 NCWIT Summit on Women and IT

Practices and Ideas to Revolutionize Computing focuses  on research-driven practices for recruitment, retention, and educational and institutional reform, in  the context of topics such as innovation, diversity of thought, computing education, organizational  change, and image. The 2012 NCWIT Summit takes place May 22-24, 2012, in Chicago, Illinois. The Summit is a free-registration event, open to NCWIT Alliance members and guests. Non-members may request an invitation to the Summit when registration opens in March; those interested in membership should contact info@ncwit.org.

Microsoft Research Graduate Women's Scholarship Program 

Microsoft Research is accepting applications for the 2012 Microsoft Research Graduate Women's Scholarship Program.  Applicants must be full-time, female students, enrolled in their first year of graduate program with an accredited university in the US or Canada, with a research focus in Computer Science, Mathematics, or Electrical Engineering.  The deadline for submission of applications is Thursday, 6 October 2011, at 11:59 P.M., Pacific Time. The Microsoft Research PhD Fellowship Program for 2012 will also start accepting applications Tuesday, 16 August 2011.  This program recognizes the best and the brightest Ph.D. students in the United States and Canada. Applicants must be enrolled in a full-time Ph.D. program in an accredited university in the US or Canada, with a research focus in Computer Science, Mathematics, or Electrical Engineering.  All applications will need to be submitted through the office of the department chair. The deadline for submission of applications is Thursday, 6 October 2011, at 11:59 P.M., Pacific Time. IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE)

This IEEE group helps to promote and support IEEE female members in the engineering and scientist professional fields through award recognitions, (STAR) programs, events, networking, career advancement and affinity groups.  The IEEE's core purpose is to foster technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.

Women in Computing Recognized by the Computer Society

The IEEE Computer Society recognizes outstanding work by computer professionals who advance the field through exceptional technical achievement and service to the profession and to society.

Anita Borg Institute (ABI)

This institute’s mission is to increase the impact of women on all aspects of technology in the world.  They offer various programs design to help industry, academia and government recruit retain and develop women technology leaders.  ABI raises the level of recognition and networking for women through awards and events.  They create communities to help women connect and share various topics of interest such as the Systers listserv.  ABI also affiliates with various organizations that provide services to technical women.

National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT)  

This center inspires women to choose careers in Information Technology.  NCWIT’s Alliances work through workshops, research, and publications to provide their members with tools to increase girl’s and women’s participation in IT.  NCWIT connects from K-12 and higher education through industry and implements best practices for recruiting, retaining and advancing women in technology.

Committee on Women in Science, Engineering and Medicine

This is a standing committee of the National Research Council (NRC). Its purpose is to increase participation of women in science, engineering, and medicine through their workshops, data researchers, policies and global affairs.

The National Council for Research on Women  

The National Council for Research on Women is a network consisting of more than 100 U.S. research, advocacy, and policy centers in the United States; however they have a global reach allowing them to keep their network informed of new debates, policies and practices with the ultimate goal to make this world a more equitable place for women and girls.

Women in Technology

This is a membership organization that provides networking support to women in the technology community by developing strong relationships, professional growth and creating new opportunities.  They use a variety of programs, interest groups, committees, publications, awards, and special events.

MentorNet  

MentorNet is the E-Mentoring Network for Diversity in Engineering and Science.  It’s a non-profit organization that provides a mentoring network to advance women and underrepresented individuals to obtain a diversified global workforce.  Their communities include: One-on-One E-Mentoring Programs, MentorNet E-Forum, Resources and a Resume Database.

Tech Bridge: Encouraging Girls in Science, Technology and Engineering Careers    

The mission of Techbridge is to introduce girls to technology, science and engineering through hands-on projects, career exploration opportunities, and academic and career guidance. Techbridge offers after-school and summer programs to reach young girls from 5th to 12th grades.

O’Reilly

This link will take you to the O'Reilly Women in Technology, a community where women express different challenges and their contribution to society in the technology field.  O’Reilly’s members maintain these communities open to any subscribers with a desire to share different topics of interest.

Association for Women in Science (AWIS) 

AWIS is a membership based organization advocating the interest of women in science, technology, mathematics and engineering.  Their members are connected though a nationwide network of chapters and partnership with other professional organizations.  Some of their benefits include career enhancement, coaching programs, workshops, and online communities. 

Women in Engineering Proactive Network (WEPAN)

WEPAN is a publicly accessible website that provides information related to women in engineering and professional networking for registered users (no fee required).  Users have access to catalogs and resource links, online professional communities and special online events such as webcasts and webinars.

National Academy of Engineering (NAE) -  EngineerGirl

The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) created this fun website EngineerGirl dedicated for young girls to learn and explore the engineering field.  The goal is to encourage girls to participate in different projects and activities while in high school that will prepare them for college, particularly in the engineering profession. The site provides links to scholarship information, engineering careers, profiles of women engineers and a forum where girls can interact directly with engineers - all available in one user-friendly website.

Singularity University (SU)

Based at the NASA Ames campus in Silicon Valley, Singularity University assembles, educates, and inspires leaders who understand and develop exponentially advancing technologies to address humanity’s grand challenges.  The university hosts a Women’s Forum (event.pingg.com/women-frontier) featuring top women entrepreneurs, humanitarian, innovators, scientists and techies to hear their voice on issues relevant to our future. 

Nerdgirls

The website is a community that encourages young women to change the world through their engineering and science skills, while showing that interdisciplinary interests and individuality help inspire innovative solutions to benefit individuals, the community and the environment. Team based projects from around the globe are profiled as well as outreach events to help mentor other young students to pursue engineering and science careers.
