Emergence of the Information Technology Discipline

The past decade has seen the gradual emergence of information technology as a new computing discipline in educational institutions. It’s important to distinguish the narrower definition of IT in this academic context from the broader definition of the term, which embraces all of computing and is more or less synonymous with “informatics.” IT, in the narrow sense, emanated from other fields of study such as computer science (CS) and information systems (IS).
