This certificate is awarded for an achievement of major value and significance to the IEEE Computer Society. The achievement should be a specific, concisely characterized accomplishment, as opposed to a collection of different efforts. Examples could include the successful launching of major conference series, publications, standards and model curricula. Madras IEEE-CS Chapter Chair H.R. Mohan Receives
Meritorious Service Award
LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 22 March, 2012 – H.R. Mohan, chair of the IEEE Computer Society Madras chapter, has been recognized with a Meritorious Service Award for his leadership in organizing timely, relevant technical and career development programs for members in India.
Under Mohan’s direction, the Madras chapter held 37 events in 2011. The events ranged from presentations on PhD planning, communication, and research methodologies to talks on multicore, cloud computing, green IT, social media networks, and leadership.
“He’s taken the chapter to a new level with the sheer volume and energy behind the range of activities,” said IEEE Computer Society Membership Director Vi Doan.
A graduate in engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Mohan is currently associate vice president (systems) with India’s national newspaper The Hindu. Mohan was instrumental for The Hindu group of publications to go online way back in 1995 as the first newspaper from India to have online presence. He was also instrumental for the digital archives initiatives of the 130+ years old newspaper.
He is associated with the Computer Society of India (CSI), IEEE, the IEEE Computer Society, the IEEE Professional Communication Society, the IEEE Communications Society, IEEE Technology Management Council, and the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), IndUNIX, Madras Library Association, Ranganathan Center for Information Studies, Society for Information Science (SIS), Society for the Advancement of Library and Information Professionals (SALIS), American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIST), All India Management Association (AIMA), Madras Management Association (MMA), Operational Research Society of India (ORSI), Technical Writers Forum of India (TWIN), New Media Forum (NMF), and the World Association of Newspapers (WAN).
He has assisted in organizing over 1,200 technical meetings, seminars, workshops, and conferences during the last 25+ years of his association with these professional societies.
Mohan is a Fellow of the Computer Society of India and the convener of the CSI Chennai CIO Forum and also serves in the CSI executive committee as the chairman of the technical division on Communications. He has served as a member of the IT Task Force Committee of CII Southern India. He serves as a member in board of studies / governing board in IT & library & Information science courses at various universities and engineering institutions. He also manages a no. of egroups relating to professional activities and assists in the creating and managing the websites for NGOs, educational institutions, and nonprofit associations.
Mohan currently edits LINK, the newsletter of the IEEE Madras Section, INFOLINE, the newsletter of CSI Madras Chapter and CSI-eNewsletter, a monthly electronic newsletter which reaches over 65,000 readers and also serves as an advisor for the CSI publications.

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 9 October, 2009 – Nominate a deserving volunteer for an IEEE Computer Society higher-level service award to show appreciation for their contributions.
Meritorious Service Certificates are given to recognize outstanding service to society programs and activities, and to the profession, as opposed to technical achievement. Service awards are open to all, and anyone can nominate using nomination forms available at http://computer.org/awards.
Nominations require one endorsement and are approved by the Awards Committee. Certificates are signed by the IEEE Computer Society President.Honor meritorious and significant service to any society-sponsored activity may qualify in whole or in part.
