IEEE Opens Office in Bangalore, India

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 10 November 2010 – IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional association, is expanding its global operations in Asia by opening an office in the central business district of Bangalore, India. The new office will enable IEEE to further support engineering and technical professionals in the country through a variety of educational and certification programs.

The Bangalore office will enable IEEE to continue its outreach efforts to local representatives from academia, government and industry and explore additional business opportunities in the region. Planned activities include continuing education, biometrics certification and software development certificate programs; and professional accreditation and standards activities, including educating local corporations about the role of IEEE standards development and implementation.

“A significant percentage of IEEE’s members reside in India, and we have an extremely active volunteer base in this region,” said E. James Prendergast, IEEE executive director. “Having a local presence will enable us to not only expand the various professional development opportunities we offer, but also cultivate relationships with local government and industry – two key strategic partners in our long-range plans for supporting the technology community in the area.”

On 29 October, IEEE hosted an inauguration and lamp-lighting ceremony with local IEEE volunteers, members and staff, including IEEE President Pedro Ray.

Also supporting IEEE expansion in the Asia Pacific region are IEEE locations in Singapore; Beijing, China; and Tokyo, Japan.
