Computer Society Student Clubs
Computer Society Student Clubs are designed for institutions that do not meet the requirements for forming a student branch chapter. Clubs may not be formed at an institution where a student branch chapter or a Student Club already exists, but may be used as a precursor to forming a student branch chapter.
In order to form a Club at least one person (advisor or student) must be a Computer Society member. To form a Student Club, a one page petition is completed by the students and submitted to the Computer Society Vice President for Chapter Activities for approval. Once approved, the Student Club exists for one academic year. In order to continue as a Student Club, the students must resubmit a petition each year.
Why Start a Club?
Both clubs and chapters are groups of students interested in Computer Science, and offer students an opportunity to learn more about the field of Computer Engineering. Forming a Club gives you access to resources such as the Distinguished Visitor Program, networking with students at other institutions, funding for Club activities, and being a part of the world's largest society for computer professionals.
With the approval of the formation of your Student Club you will be allowed reimbursement of up to $150 per year for club activities.
How Do I Start a Club?
First you will want to get together with your faculty advisor and at least two other students to submit the petition. Clubs require at least four members. Out of this four at least one will have to be a Computer Society member. This could be a faculty advisor or a student.
Your club may be interested in touring a local company, hosting a DVP Speaker, or organizing to participate in the CSIDC. Networking with Computer Society chapters and student chapters can provide your club with inspiration and ideas as to what activities you would like to try.
Your club members may be interested in attending Computer Society conferences, and your club could organize fundraising to assist with travel costs or in contacting the conference organizers to request travel grants.
Share the responsibility! An executive committee has members such as a chair, vice-chair, treasurer, and secretary. This committee oversees the operations of the club, and likely meets more frequently than the club in order to organize activities for other club members. The executive may form other committees such as Events, Fundraising, and Communications. The Events committee may take responsibility for organizing a speaker series, and pass on tasks such as emailing and postering to the Communications committee. If this sounds like too many committees for your club, then the executive may simply help with delegating all the little tasks that need completing to make an event successful and ensuring that things get done. While it may be easier for the Chair to do all of these things, recruiting help from the membership will help strengthen the local organization and encourage participation. For large events, a committee may be more appropriate than a single volunteer due to the workload.
