Co-sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society and Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute, the award is open to all software professionals who participate in software development, support, or management, and are employed by and participate in the software work of an organization that produces, supports, enhances, or otherwise provides software-intensive products or services.

The nomination deadline is 1 November. Anyone may nominate. All nominations must be seconded by a senior executive of the software organization in which the nominated individual or team works, and supported by a two-page description indicating the nature of the achievement. The finalists and winner will be announced and recognized by the Computer Society and SEI. The winner will receive an engraved, commemorative plaque and US $1,500 honorarium. This award is normally presented at the annual International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE) or a similar event determined by the chair of the Technical Council on Software Engineering (TCSE) and the SEI director. The winner will be invited to produce a technical report describing the process improvement and results, and to present a paper at the Annual Software Engineering Process Group (SEPG) Conference or a similar event..

The Richard E. Merwin Award for Distinguished Service is given for outstanding volunteer service to the profession at large, including significant service to the IEEE Computer Society or its predecessor organizations. The award is for service as opposed to technical achievement.

The Merwin Award is the Computer Society’s highest-level volunteer service award, and the highest selection criteria are maintained. Anyone can nominate. The deadline for making a nomination is 1 November.

The award consists of a bronze medal and US $5,000 honorarium. No current or past society president is eligible until four years after completion of presidential service.
