About Open Access

Learn how to publish and find open access content in IEEE Computer Society publications.

To make computing research more accessible and to give authors more options, the IEEE Computer Society has various hybrid and fully open access (OA) publications. OA research is made freely available to all while following the same high-quality peer review process that our traditional journals receive.

For Authors

Authors look to the IEEE Computer Society to publish their work because we are the leading authoritative source for computing research. By choosing to make their paper OA, authors are able to easily share their research at no cost to others and to benefit from a higher number of citations due to the increase in exposure. This is also a great solution for those who are required to publish their work as OA due to government research funding or university consortium funding, including Plan S.

OA papers go through the same rigorous peer review process that the IEEE Computer Society sets for all its publications. For more information on what that process looks like, please read our author guidelines.

OA content is fully funded by the authors through an article processing charge (APC) selected at the time of submission. However, IEEE Computer Society members qualify for a 20% discount on these charges. Additionally, authors from low-income or lower-middle-income countries, as listed by the World Bank Country and Lending Groups, may qualify for additional discounts or waivers.

Please visit the IEEE Open Access FAQs for further details.

Open Access Journal

The IEEE Open Journal of the Computer Society (OJ-CS) is our Gold OA journal, launched in 2020, and is 100% OA. Be among the first to be published in OJ-CS and benefit from rapid publication. Currently, accepted papers that pass our rigorous peer review process have been able to be published in as quickly as 10 weeks.

IEEE Computer Society Open Access Statement of Principle

The IEEE Computer Society and its leadership share and support our community’s desire for universal open and easily accessible research, to maximize its potential impact, including the expansion of OA.

In line with IEEE OA policy (see https://open.ieee.org), we are committed to ensuring that the Computer Society publications portfolio provides a variety of OA options to meet the needs of authors, funders, and institutions that range from Green (authors openly self-archive preprints) to Hybrid (authors may choose to make their article OA) to Gold (article processing charges paid by authors or institutions).

The Computer Society must balance its desire for open sharing of all knowledge and the need to support its publications and other mission-based resources, activities, and services for its members. We are considering a number of changes to expand and enhance the impact of our publications.

We welcome your suggestions and ask that you reach out to us through periodicals@computer.org.
