Researchers Develop Means to Thwart Wireless Network Attacks

MIT researchers have developed a protocol able to prevent man-in-the-middle attacks against wireless networks. Their software-based tamper-evident pairing system lets wireless radios automatically pair without using passwords, without relying on out-of-band techniques, and without employing additional technologies such as an infrared transmitter. In a typical attack, the attacker has to drown out the legitimate sender’s signal. In the new approach, a second string of numbers related to the key – heard as radiation bursts and silence – is transmitted following the encryption key transmission. If an attacker attempts to substitute his key for the legitimate sender’s, he must send the corresponding sequence of bursts and silences, but the researchers say these will not match the original, indicating an attack.
