McAfee: US Email Addresses Cheap for Spammers

Need to buy a million US-based email addresses? The going rate is US$25, according to a newly released malware report from McAfee. Similar prices are being asked for address lists in Australia, Germany, and Russia, while the same amount of Turkey-based email addresses is going for US$50. The report states that the number of Rustock botnets, typically used for distributing spam, is decreasing, but McAfee researchers say there might be a resurgence in activity if criminals “reseed” the botnet. Other botnets, including Maazben and Cutwail, have been more active this quarter. The report also shows that mobile malware is on the rise, with Google’s Android now the most attacked mobile operating system. McAfee states that new malware appears daily. The firm expects its malware collection to reach a record 75 million samples by the end of 2011. It reportedly found 12 million unique samples of malware in the first half of 2011, up 22 percent from the previous year.
