Software Automatically Transforms Films into Comic Strips

Creating comics can be costly and time-intensive, even when using digital tools. In response, researchers from China’s Hefei University of Technology have developed software that automatically transforms parts of films into comic strips without human intervention. Their Movie2Comics application uses an algorithm designed to identify who is speaking in a scene when multiple people are in the frame. It also automatically generates different sizes of comic panels and word balloons, and renders images in a cartoon-based style. The researchers say both professionals and hobbyists could use Movie2Comics. They tested the software using two- to seven-minute clips from recent films including “Titanic” and “Sherlock Holmes.” They say they are working to enhance their system and eliminate problems such as word bubbles being associated with incorrect characters. They published their research in IEEE Transactions on Multimedia. (“Movie2Comics: Towards a Lively Video Content Presentation,” Meng Wang, et al. IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, 2012.)
