Researchers Develop Transparent Computer

MIT and Microsoft researchers this week demonstrated a transparent computer that lets users “reach inside” and touch digital content. With help from Microsoft scientists, Jinha Lee—an MIT doctoral candidate fulfilling his South Korean military obligation by working at Samsung Electronics—designed the SpaceTop 3D PC. The system includes a transparent LED display with built-in cameras used to track a user’s gestures and eye movements. Lee said the machine enables people to use computers more intuitively. “SpaceTop allows users to type, click, draw in 2D, and directly manipulate interface elements that float in the 3D space above the keyboard.” It would also be a helpful interface for young users, he says. Lee demonstrated the computer at the recent TED conference in Long Beach, California. (BBC)(Wired UK)(SpaceTop)
