ITU Holds Global Intellectual-Property Meeting

The International Telecommunication Union, the United Nations agency that addresses information and communication technologies, has hosted a worldwide meeting to discuss whether action is needed to stop intellectual-property disputes that might thwart technology innovation. The ITU Patent Roundtable gathered representatives from technology firms, patent officers, regulators, and academics in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss fair, reasonable and nondiscriminatory patents. Experts acknowledged these factors are critical to the development of industry standards. The discussion was held in the wake of numerous patent-related lawsuits involving smartphone makers.
