College Evaluating Iris-Based Biometric Security

Winthrop University, a small college in South Carolina, is testing iris scanning security for building access. Although the military and government have used this form of biometric security for years, it is now being increasingly investigated for civilian use. One of the prime locations for the technology at the campus, which is being supplied by Iris ID, is its early childhood education school. Similar technology is being developed for elementary school bus use. Blinkspot, a South Dakota company, uses iris scans that let school districts match children with the proper school bus. An associated mobile application notifies parents where their child is, complete with photographs and a time and date stamped Google map. Other companies are working on similar technologies for ATM use and airport access. (Mashable)(Discovery News)(CNN Money)
