Popular Science Magazine Ends Website Reader Comments

The website for Popular Science magazine has ended its readers’ ability for to leave comments. The company says it took the decision because problems with trolls, those posters making inflammatory or wildly off-topic comments, and spambots made fostering lively debate difficult. The publication’s content director, Suzanne LaBarre, said the decision was supported by University of Wisconsin research showing that comments on online items can polarize readers and distort their interpretation of a news story.
