Android-Based Bot Network Uncovered

A US messaging security firm discovered an Android Trojan that creates an SMS-based spam botnet. The hackers are leveraging users’ desire for popular games, such as Angry Birds Space and Need for Speed Most Wanted, by offering the promise of these for free. If user clicks on a link embedded in the message, an application is downloaded. Although it claims to be for the game, it is installing a Trojan known as SpamSoldier. The hackers are also using a “free gift card” ruse. The Trojan has been found on all major US carriers’ networks. Infected users could see lower communications speeds and significantly higher bills.
