With the federal government’s international travel restrictions, the continuing high cost of airfare, and the recent scandals involving flight crew members bumping passengers or fighting with them, the thought of flying the friendly skies seems anything but friendly.
However, it gave Susanne Boll—professor for media informatics and multimedia systems at the University of Oldenburg in Germany—a chance to attend a conference in Denver, Colorado remotely by using a BeamPro telepresence robot to interact with other conference attendees.
Her experience showed some of the benefits and drawbacks to using the BeamPro robot in a conference environment.
While the visual quality was good in the beginning, the quality declined as more and more people walked around behind her conversation partner. Also, the audio quality declined with increased background noise.
