It is a great honor for me to become the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG) and I am excited to take on the challenge of keeping TVCG improving and growing. I wish to thank Hans Hagen and Arie Kaufman for their excellent work for the first eight years of the journal, as well as all of the members of the editorial board and the paper reviewers over the past eight years. TVCG is a very successful, highly regarded journal in our field and even in all of computer science. The most recent Journal Citations Report for 2001 ranks TVCG eighth of 366 computer science journals in terms of impact factor. The submission rate for TVCG has also been steadily increasing.
I will work to continue to improve the submission rate, quality of submissions, speed of review, and timely publication of material in TVCG. The success of the journal has created a temporary publication backlog that will be corrected over the next six months and we hope to reduce the submission to first decision time to three to four months by the end of this year. I strongly encourage you to submit your latest research to TVCG and to take advantage of the Digital Library's support for multimedia content (images, animations).
Finally, the IEEE Computer Society is implementing page charges for all overlength papers in IEEE CS Transactions, starting in the second quarter of 2003. Authors are encouraged to keep their articles within page guidelines to avoid being charged. Papers that are over length prevent other articles from being published in a timely manner. Please visit the author center for TVCG for more information about submission guidelines ( http://computer.org/mc/tvcg/author.htm).
