Computer architects and researchers face several challenges when using benchmarks in industry product development and academic research, namely: (1) Benchmarks only represent a sample of the application behavior space, (2) Benchmarks are rigid and measure performance at a single point, (3) Benchmark suites are costly to develop, maintain, and upgrade, and (4) Benchmarks that are standardized are open-source whereas applications of interest are typically proprietary.
