During these last years, a big amount of efforts have been devoted to specify and develop public key infrastructures (PKIs). Several initiatives around the world have given as a result the emergency of the one PKI based on X.509 certificates and other based on EDIFACT certificate. However, these PKIs are not inter-operable, mainly due to the fact that certificates and messages are coded differently (ASN.1 and DER are used for X.509 PKI, EDIFACT syntax for EDIFACT PKI).DEDICA (Directory based EDI Certificate Access and management) is a research and development project established by the European Commission under the Telematics Applications program. The main objective of the DEDICA project is to define and to provide means to make these two infrastructures inter-operable without increasing the amount of information to be managed in them. The proposed solution is a gateway tool interconnecting both PKIs.
