ABSTRACT
The idea of building software from existing components is as old as the field of software engineering itself yet there are no accepted solutions. This problem is the key technical challenge in software engineering and deserves a concerted attack. While there are some hopeful signs on the horizon that show that the problem is being addressed, the problem remain difficult. I address some of the difficulties that we face.
