It is generally accepted that mature software organizations staffed by qualified software professionals can repeatedly deliver quality software artifacts that meet their requirements. Qualified software professionals today have a variety of ways to establish their credentials. A promising approach to establishing one's credentials as a software engineering professional is through certification. This paper gives an overview of approaches to certification of software professionals, with special attention to the IEEE Computer Society's Certified Software Development Professional certification program.
