Welcome to Soapbox, a forum for readers to talk to each other about the issues they face everyday. We accept contributions of any length and in many languages. See the ad on p. 80 about how to participate.

Our first contribution warns of the unavoidable side-effects of using metrics, especially in the production of an intangible product such as software. If managers overemphasize particular metrics, bogus metrics will soon appear. To detect them, I suggest managers view facts from many perspectives. For example, if productivity metrics are intentionally faked, this will become obvious when you examine the cost per line of code and the hourly cost.

— Tomoo Matsubara
