<p>Three forms of intellectual property protection-trade secrecy, copyrights, and patents-are discussed. Deciding how to use and possibly combine these forms of protection depends on the nature of the protection needed and the ways in which the software will be distributed. It is argued that the more important the software is to a company and the more significant technologically it is to the industry, the more crucial a solid protection strategy becomes.</p>
