This survey paper analyzes communication requirements of evolving distributed multimedia applications. In order to understand the ongoing evolution of networking, we study how current and new networking technologies support the identified requirements. Besides functional aspects, the question how the new technologies blend with the existing infrastructures is analyzed. Infrastructure investments, e.g. wiring, interconnection and management contribute the largest part of the cost associated with the introduction of new networking technologies, thus this aspect is crucial for the success of a new technology. Finally a brief discussion of the higher layer communication issues associated with the support of integrated multimedia communication concludes the paper.

Contact the author at IBM European Networking Center, Vangerowstrasse 18, 69115 Heidelberg, Federal Republic of Germany, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
